“If we evolved from monkeys then why are there still monkeys?,” the Christian exclaims with uncultivated confidence. This question, being more rhetorical than inquisitive, has become symbolic of the uneducated and unwilling status of contemporary Christians, and thus allowing the mockery and ridicule of our brothers and sisters in Christ by the forever scoffing Scientific Community. I, who have witnessed, defended, and now scoff as well, justify my frustration with the acknowledgement of the issue, being our ignorance and illiteracy of the philosophies and rational thinking skills that are eternally bonded to the essence of religion as a whole. This issue isn’t specifically a Christian problem, as I am sure that there are many people today who still can’t answer that question, religious and non-religious, but we must understand that the fact that we carry the Christian image, along with evangelism being a core part of our faith, we cannot afford to remain ignorant of competing idealisms and theories, for we are at war. We are at war with ourselves and the enemy. The enemy who is clever and crafty enough to manipulate the minds of smart men against God and his truths, providing many paths to escape from the revelation of sin and the conviction that it brings. Romans 1:18-20 (NASB
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
This scripture gives evidence that no matter what scientist may proclaim, God’s judgement will not be stopped, for they are without excuse, all evidence of his existence and nature is in what he has made. But forcing scriptures like these down their throats will do more harm than good whether we are evangelizing or simply conversing with skeptics. We must realize that they do not believe the Bible has any leverage, because once again they are not even sure in God’s existence to begin with. What they do believe in, or at least most skeptics claim to believe in is logic and rational thought. Which I can see hints of decent logic in the again fallacious “why are there still monkeys” argument with the idea that if science claims that we evolved from monkeys then naturally all monkeys should be humans now, right? Wrong. This comes from the lack of understanding in the concept of evolution as a whole. For all those who think or have thought this argument to be sound, it is not your fault. The case may be that if you are older, evolution was not taught as strenuously as it is today, and if you are younger and have been subjected to strenuous teachings against your faith, having a strict Christian background and household can easily effect how well one retains such unwanted information.
The theory of evolution doesn’t claim that we evolved from monkeys but rather there was an ancestor species that humans and other primates both derived from over millions of years of adaptions through natural selection. I personally don’t believe it but once again, that should not keep us from having knowledge and understanding of the subject. Our lack of such has left us defenseless and out of touch with those who follow such ideologies. Just like the rise of rock and roll, and most recently hip hop we have become the grouchy parent who has no tolerance for “such nonsense” and wonder “what’s the matter with this generation!” while our children continue to listen.
We must begin to sharpen our sword of the spirit with knowledge of God’s word, and reinforce our shield of faith with knowledge of the world we live in. Ways we can accomplish this is to spend time studying scripture along with science textbooks (not necessarily at the same time), seek God’s glory within the sciences do not reject them due to our unfamiliarity.
Utilizing the internet, websites such as www.gotquestions.org, www.answersingenesis.org, and simply searching Christian Apologetics on YouTube will aid those who are interested in gaining the knowledge and skills to defend their faith rationally. If you prefer books then I truly recommend looking into Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis and Ultimate Proof of Creation by Dr. Jason Lisle. This is merely an introduction for this broad and controversial subject for I feel it is of the upmost importance to take the time to delve properly into how we became this way along with more practical solutions for the future.
